Colour by Concept by artist Jeffrey Spalding
March 10, 2018 - May 18, 2018
Fun and decorative paintings by Jeffrey Spalding of Vancouver, produced during a seven-month art residency in Novak Graphics Studios, Admiral, SK. This exhibition features two series of colourist abstraction paintings including a vertical stripe format and a format using a tile-work of squares.
Colourist abstraction is when an artist focuses on the visual experience created through the interaction of colours within the depth of space. When observing a picture, ask yourself which colours are closer to you or further away.
The tradition of colourist painting uses an analytical approach to determine colour choices. Spalding’s works differ from tradition by using unique concepts drawn from popular culture and local experience to determine the colours included in each artwork.
For example: “The Four Most Popular “Martha Stewart Living” Bathroom Colours”, “Four Colour Picks by Postal Clerk”, “The Four Most Expensive Oil Pigments by Rublof”.
