Revolution in the Rock Garden by Edward Poitras
March 5, 2022 - April 24, 2022
Treaty Four Monument, 2003, wood, various dimensions by Edward Poitras
A life Inspired by myth, history, collaboration and culture.
This exhibition presents compelling political and provocative artwork by renowned artist, Edward Poitras of Saskatchewan. Poitras envisions this in four parts at four different locations – Swift Current, Moose Jaw, Yorkton and Medicine Hat – within Treaty Four territory at participating galleries, including Art Gallery of Swift Current, Moose Jaw Museum & Art Gallery, Godfrey Dean Art Gallery in Yorkton, SK, and the Esplanade Arts & Heritage Centre in Medicine Hat, AB. Poitras will revisit and re-contextualize his past works, as well as include some new artworks, which address the colonial history and impact of Treaty Four.
“The works in this exhibition are inspired by the history of this place and objects made by nature and human beings relative to this territory. A treaty, a few rocks, bones, monuments made, and monuments destroyed. Toppled, blown up and ground into history. Sometimes forgotten and lost in time, only to resurface in the erosion of dominant narratives. Made anew in words, remade into forms and given new meaning. My story.” – Edward Poitras
Each exhibition in the series will feature installation works, video, painting, photography and sculpture, reflecting the diversity of Poitras’ long-standing practice in visual and performance art, offering audiences a rich experience to engage visually and conceptually with issues pertaining to the Treaties, colonialism, post-colonialism, cultural identity and place, spirituality, language loss, storytelling, and the rewriting of history, as well as reflecting on processes towards Truth and Reconciliation.
